In the study, the Dual-N-Back exercise was used to train working memory and it did in fact have a powerful effect upon working memory but the unexpected result was that it also powerfully increased Fluid Intelligence. I knew that I was going to enjoy this book even before I even opened it because the subtitle struck home with me. The full title is Stepping Up-How taking responsibility changes everything. Long ago, I adopted the idea in my life of taking what I call radical responsibility. Too many of us are willing to blame the external world for our unhappiness and lack of satisfaction. The fact is-if we take 100% responsibility for our life then we can live a full and rich life. Not only will our life be better but also those who are close to us-our friends, our family, our coworkers and everyone else that we come in contact with. In fact, carried to the extreme, we can change the world.
John Izzo Ph.D. Is the author of the bestseller: The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die. Like the “Five Secrets” I expect that “Stepping Up” will also be a bestseller. I really enjoyed the way that John structured this book. Each chapter he lists a key theme or idea and then provides a short story to support his theme or idea. I have always found this method of taking my medicine far superior to the method so often used in personal development literature. I can learn much more from a short story. It has much more impact for me than someone just telling me a list of ways that I should be doing things.
I also like the way in which John constructed this book, in that, at the end of each chapter he lists the key points and themes that we should remember and at the end of the book he has a separate chapter which we can easily reference to find the key themes and ideas that he taught us throughout the book.
Getting back to the main point of the book-we need to stop blaming the world outside and start taking personal responsibility for our emotions and actions. In a recent survey in the United States which is arguably the richest and most powerful nation in the world, 80% of the US population said they were not happy with their lives. This can only be the result of living our lives in a manner to suit external sources rather than taking personal responsibility and living a life that fulfills our personal dreams. As long as we base our lives on what others think, we are doomed to a life of mediocrity and dissatisfaction.
Taking 100% responsibility for life does not mean blaming ourselves for personal failures but it does mean viewing our life in an objective nonjudgmental manner which will lead to creating a better life for ourselves. If we live our life for others then we will always be dissatisfied. However, if we live a life of personal responsibility that is congruent with our deepest values then we can be assured that we have lived a life that is meaningful.
If you’re wondering why I only gave this book 4 stars, it is only because I felt that some of the supporting stories could have been stronger and had greater impact. Other than that, I feel this is an important book and should be on everyone’s reading shelf. If you read and apply the idea of radical responsibility and really step up not only can you change your life and those who are close to you but maybe even on a worldwide basis. As John said, it all starts with one step and the rest will follow.

I was a teenager when I first heard this speech and it was one of those moments that help shape the person I am, today. Just over 17 minutes long-it still stirs my soul every time that I listen to these heart felt words that did, in fact, help shape our nation’s vision. “I have a Dream.”
While much of the program is devoted to financial prosperity, it truly supports being truly wealthy in all areas of our lives-family, spiritual, friends, career et. al. Among the many newsletters that I subscribe to, one of my favorites is from Noah St John. Noah, most noted for his work with the Success Clinic and Afformations, puts out one of the most content rich newsletters available. In his newsletter today, he posted what many consider the most powerful, motivational video ever produced. While many of the speeches in this clip are from movie characters, I am most moved by the words of Muhammad Ali. Many of you are too young to have followed Ali’s career. I remember his victory at the Olympics. Then on to his professional career. At first, the public and the press thought he was a joke. He was brash and loud proclaiming:”I am the Greatest.” They stopped laughing when he stopped Sonny Liston with what was called at the time “The Invisible Punch.” He continued on “dancing like a butterfly and stinging like a bee” until the US government sent him to prison for refusing military service in protest over the Viet Nam War. He was stripped of his heavyweight championship crown and when he left prison, everyone though he was over the hill. Wrong again, he went on to regain his world championship and proved to us, in his heart that he was a true champion for all times.
Personally, my greatest fear is mediocrity. I refuse to live by external standards. We must live in a way that we are true to our deepest self-our heart and our soul. Tweet
